Gaon Ganga

l   Launched on 19 November, 2000

l   Scheme is our sustainable response to the problem of recurring drought and scarcity of water

l   Creating a Ganges (Ganga) in every village and habitat

 l   Objectives are three fold:

   Creation of at least one sustainable source of water in every village/habitat

   Need convergence for safe drinking water, community nistar and irrigation needs

   Sensitizing communities towards the scarcity value of water

l   Strategies :

    Developing new sources of water through sustainable exploration of ground water potential consistent with environment

    Conserving existing sources of water through community initiated maintenance and renewal through panchayats

    Preventing wastes and run-offs through appropriate intervention at the local community level

    Social Mobilization by motivating the community to form user groups – mainly of women – to have a say in all matters relating to water. Sensitizing communities to realize the scarcity value of water.

l   Target :

   17219 villages to be covered in 3 years (by end Oct.2003)

l   Achievement :

  8589(upto 30-09-04) and closed projects in as many villages completed by developing new sources

   3918 projects of conserving existing sources and preventing wastes through check-dams, diversions etc. completed so far

- Masonry stop dam 62, Boulders check dams 142, Percolation tank 25, Dyke 13, Silt trap 168, village ponds 13, Desisting of Tank 68, Recharge pit 15. Total 506 Projects of conserving existing sources and preventing waster through check-dams, diversions  etc.,k completed.

l Beneficiaries :

   Rural Population covered = 67,69,970

   Scheduled Caste population =8,40,176(13.4%)

   Scheduled Tribe population = 1,48,598 (23.7%)

l   Funding :

   Funded from out of central funds for accelerated rural water supply programme, and

   Eleventh Finance Commission grants of Rs. 789.75 lacs ear marked by state government.
